Vin Diesel and Tara Reid--need I say more?

In February, my good friend, Natan, and I attended the annual dork conference, Wondercon, in SF. I’d been two years prior and had an exciting time due to the attendance of fantasy master Joss Whedon. At that time, I had finished the entirety of both the Buffy and Angel series and was interested in him for his accute grasp on vampire mythology (and human emotion. also vampire love). He was there, however, to promote his movie, Serenity, which as you all know is based on his short-lived series, Firefly, which is basically a western set in space. At the time, I had yet to buy into the firefly craze and so the experience of Wondercon, though exciting, was definitely not as exciting as it could have been, say 6 months later (after said media had been consumed). This year was different. We were in the midst of getting caught up on “the best TV show ever made” (aka Battlestar Galactica) and guess who was there??!!! None other than Richard Hatch, the original Apollo (and Tom Zarek the on the latest version of the show).

He charged money for an autograph so I took his picture instead! I’ve learned from these conferences that the saddest thing in the world is a character actor from an old scifi show—still vaguely recognizable and sitting in a huge convention center while people pass by and stare, trying to recognize the face, then giving up and looking at the photo to at least confirm that they recognize the show. We didn’t stay in that section for long. We browsed and ate sushi and then returned for the best part of the whole day—the costume contest! We’re going to go as SOMETHING next year, maybe cylons. The winners this year were some dudes dressed up as Lego Darth Vader and Lego Luke Skywalker.
