Tears were shed in our household last night, when Hillary took the stage. I will refrain from identifying from whom they streamed. I bought this Hillary action figure for the boys to play with, though it only resembles her from the neck down. She's packed away in my backpack for our big trip tomorrow!

When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.
Po' Monkey died last week. We visited his, the last remaining juke joint in the Mississippi Delta, a little over 3 years ago. He was 72 at the time, but seemed much older, which was expected given the time/place of his birth and experiences of his life. He was still working every day on the farm that was also his residence. It was a sharecropper shack, standing upright and functional on a road dotted with many that were decrepit and falling down while somewhere in the process of being reclaimed by nature. I will never forget learning that in the early aughts, his boss had refused to give him the day off to receive an award from the Delta Center for Culture and Learning. He returned from work late at night to a throng of people excited to see him. To me, he just seemed tired and like he'd prefer to sleep, but there was a party in his living room. It's the end of an era, time marches on, society changes, and all that. I guess it's just that we seem like we're on the precipice of some dark changes and a growing unpredictability and the burning down of his particular library is more relevant than ever.
