last day of 2012

We’re celebrating the east coast NYE tonight because who can stay up past 9:30 after the age of 35?  We’ll be playing games with my parents and eating sandwiches.  If you’d told my 16 year-old self that this is how I would spend my new year’s eve, I probably would have slapped you.  But I’m firmly middle aged now and this is exactly what I want to do (or spend time playing scrabble with D and M, but they’re out of town).  This year was officially the best ever because it’s the year of the birth of my water dragon (Theo).  I don’t have any super ambitious resolutions for 2013--mainly just to be nicer to the people around me and make hard copies of all my digital photos (digital entropy fears again).

Some highlights from 2012:  Theodore, my parents moving to CA, working with people I really like, 6 months of maternity leave, Natan's paternity leave all fall, learning how to make a budget, embracing the downtown lifestyle (walking to cafes, stores and swings).

Present wrapping styles this holiday season (IKEA sold a tree cookie wrapping paper that was the best):

I love this baby (even when he is resisting photos):  Lake Tahoe last summer.

It's fun, it's exciting, it's legal in most states*

Here are some photos from our wonderful Christmas day.  We’ve sort of settled into a yearly routine:  we eat a lot of meals out of the house that involve sea creatures, we spend nearly half the day unwrapping presents, and we do much imbibing.  According to Natan, we consumed 4 bottles of wine and 12 coffee drinks in one day (score!).

Things to note this year:
Remember my father’s wrapping prowess as demonstrated a few years ago?

He outdid himself this year. Check it out!
He found my mom’s Christmas jewelry stored away in the gift wrapping box, mistook it for wrapping materials, and proceeded to wrap her present with it (necklace and earrings)!

We had many varieties of wine, including one called “Ménage a Trois”, because it was made out of three kinds of grapes.  I would think that the name of this wine would turn away all customers but the most obnoxious of college frat boys, but my dad bought two bottles (!), which I couldn’t bring myself to drink.  I mean, COME ON.

It was a non-toxic pan (shipped in a huge box).
Theo starting unwrapping presents with no prompting--a true Pruett!

We went to the beach the next day.
 New friends.

fall crafting round up

Real talk: taking pictures of babies is hard.  He's never still for long enough and at some point in our mommy-Theo picture sessions he tries to eat the camera.  I have many, many pictures that look like some variation of this:
Which is awesome--perhaps even better than the "good" pictures?  I call this one "The Walking Theo".

Real talk, II: Being the mother of an infant while working full time has obviously left me with lots of time to work on crafting projects.  Given the absurdity of trying to get anything done with a child around, much less any sort of thing that requires sustained attention and/or thinking, it is ironic that I pulled out my sewing machine this fall for the first time in about five years.  Parenthood has apparently inspired me to be more efficient with my time (or something) in order to jump start my sewing life.

Since we have turned our back computer room/alcove/hallway/mud room/closet/crawl hole/whatever into Theo’s room, and the breakfast bar in the kitchen looks into said room, a curtain needed to be made.  As the breakfast bar is an unusual size for a curtain, I couldn’t just buy one, and instead I took on curtain making as a labor of love.  My initial idea was to have a blue fabric with little white cloud pockets to hold small stuffed animals--a cloud curtain.  I went to IKEA in search of a suitable fabric, was unsuccessful in my original vision, and then totally scored with a revised vision--a forest curtain.

The Fredrika fabric was on clearance, and looked modern and fairly simple, so I decided to modify it into a magical forest curtain instead (with tree pockets for stuffed animals/puppets).
I measured out the fabric and cut out half circles/branches from felt in order to cover the bottom of a few trees (thus making them “magical”).  I decided to then add fabric accents on top of the felt tree bottoms to make them look colorful.  This process was the longest part of curtain making.

I then sewed them onto the fabric, added buttons to the non-magical trees and voila!  A curtain is born!

Then I had to do it again for the other side (ugh).

In the end, I’m pretty happy with it—it’s really cheery for his room and the other (basic) side still looks good in our kitchen.

I’m not sure that it’s very effective at keeping out noise, but it does offer some privacy and blocks out the light reasonably well.  I googled projects with this fabric to see what other things people had done with it.  I didn’t find any other pocket curtains, but I did find a tutorial for creating some tree pillows, which I made promptly made for maximum cutesie-ness.

The other big fall project is the felt faux taxidermy elephant head (!) that I’m making for Theo’s room.  Surely you’ve been to Anthropologie lately and taken note of the paper mache taxidermy heads you can purchase for approximately one gazillion dollars?  No?  Well, let me tell you that faux taxidermy is all the ironic hipster rage these days.  I tried just winging it (no pattern or guidance except for a picture from some lady’s etsy shop) and it’s not as easy or cute looking as I thought it’d be, but here’s the progress so far.

How can I not want to make a million things for this little guy?

digital life tending towards entropy

I’m trying to get my digital picture life in order over the break.  I apparently have pictures spread out over two different computers and a variety of cloud storage locations (google drive, flickr, dropbox).   In my haste to back up any stray file I ever happen upon, I’ve managed to back up the same pictures multiple times and in differently named folders.  I should probably have my computer privileges (or at least my file storing privileges) revoked.   This is what happens when your google accounts go missing for 48 hours (worst 48 hours of my LIFE), your camera/memory card gets smashed by a car, and your external hard drive stops working (all of these things happened in the same year, mind you):  you fear losing things and then overcompensate in the file saving department.

Looking through the last year in pictures is kind of fun, though:  I found this sweet one of me and Theo sleeping during those crazy, sleep-deprived days of just about 8 months ago (has it been that long?) that I’m going to print out (I also fear digital entropy now and need to make hard copies of all important photos—thanks, Jesse!).

This baby loves his dad.
A lot.
And yes, I did put him in a baby Santa Claus outfit for Christmas.
