Today I received an e-mail from Will that inspired this post. He revealed that "when I was little, I used to think that all cats were female and all dogs were male and that they were the same species."
This amazing admission struck me as the epitome of "thinking outside the box". One could argue that is merely the failing of the public school system, but I think it speaks to his manner of knowing. In honor of this amazing person (new dad!), I compiled a few memories that warm my heart and bring a chuckle to my belly.
1. When Will was 18, he applied for a job at the local video store. The application basically consisted of: name, address, and name as many Robin Williams movies as you can. Will got the job by naming 24 Robin Williams movies. And don't even get him STARTED on Brendan Fraser movies!
2. As a high school basketball superstar, Will was required to wear the Cactus Shadows (go Falcons!) white home game shorts. During one game he wore boxers with a smiley face on the butt, that were clearly visible through his shorts. The Pruett's have never been considered fashionistas (purple jeans--1996), but this look was clearly before it's time. Look at Britney and Christina...it took them a full four years after Will to provocatively show their underwear.
3. (Warning: graphic details follow) During the mid-80s, when we lived in rural Missouri, Will was a boy scout. He went to boy scout camp one summer and decided that the bathrooms he had to share were too dirty. He would, therefore, "hold it" until he got home, which was inconveniently one week later. But ever the promise keeper, he kept his word (to his butt) and did not touch the toilet. A man of more honor and integrity there never was!
